Newbie Blogger – Please be gentle. The Blogging Goddess isn’t finished with me yet.

Welcome to my blog, I’ll be updating this blog (probably about once per week) with discussions on books, interviews (authors, editors, reviewers, anybody who will talk to me 🙂 ), recipes and much more.

I’ve been tinkering around, trying to figure this thing out, I think I got it. I’m sure if I did screw up, someone out there will let me know. That strike out thing is interesting, I’ve seen it on other blogs, no idea what it means, so I won’t use it. Sorry, I couldn’t resist. I tend to press buttons and tinker with things I’m not supposed to at times.

For the first blog, I guess should post a short bio about myself, but in all honesty, that is one of the hardest things I’m asked to do. I do have a bio on my website, www.selenarobins.com and I tend to use that one when asked to submit a bio. I like to call it time management.

A few tidbits about me, not listed on my site’s bio:

I learned to play the accordian at an early age. Hey, I’m Italian, it’s a right of passage. I wasn’t that good at it. However, I did enjoy practicing at home and driving my older siblings crazy with my attempts at Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I also took Highland Dance classes. I bet you’re wondering why a little Italian girl took Highland dancing? I’m first generation Canadian, I was born in Canada, while my parents and siblings all immigrated from Italy. Hence, why my brothers convinced me I was found on their doorstep, but that’s another story.

My parents wanted to assimilate with the Canadian culture. My dad at the time smoked cigarettes (Export A). On the package was a picture of a woman, wearing a Scottish tam and my parents watched Don Messer’s Jubilee to learn the language. After I was born, they associated these things with the Canadian culture, so when I was old enough, they enrolled me in Highland Dancing.

I didn’t learn to speak English until I was six years old, sometimes this can still effect me, as I think in one language and things come out in English in an awkward way. “English wasn’t my first language,” is what I say. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

I used to be quite the daredevil. Broken knee, wore a full leg cast (downhill skiing), shattered my radial head in my left arm (roller-blading), broken toe (fell down the stairs while multi-tasking, some will say, I can be a klutz, I don’t agree…well, not 100%).

My husband has recently stated that he’d love to start a blog called, “Things my wife says and does.” I’m not concerned, he doesn’t even like to write emails. Funny guy. He makes me laugh, I make him laugh. I love to cook, he loves to eat what I cook. I also like to make him blush, like when I publicly state, he has given me my happy-ever-after that I love to write and read about in romance novels.

Okay, enough about me………

To kick off the Holiday Season and my first blog, I’m going to have a draw.

Comment on the blog, or ask me a question (anything goes…….well, almost anything) and I’ll enter your name for a chance to win 1 of three 3 Gift Certificates to My Bookstore and More. Draw ends, December 23rd.

P.S. I’ll be posting some recipes later on this blog.

  6. Hi Selena, I enjoyed your first post. I too really like the colors, they are easy to read and I love blue! The water thing is perfect and the photo at the top is awesome, it makes me want to be there sitting on the dock, watching the waves crash and reading a book. I’ll be looking forward to the recipes – food, reading about food, eating food, smelling food, dreaming about food, it’s all good. Do you have a web site where you have your books and WIP listed? If not, do you plan to list them here so your stalkers, err, your fans, can find them easily?

      1. I watched the video, very nicely done. Thanks for the pointer to your website, I’ll be checking it out. I’ve always thought that real cooks are the ones who don’t need a cookbook to turn out a fabulous dish. Sadly, I’m hopeless without a set recipe. I even out a book called something like ‘how to cook without a book’ – the idea is to learn some basic ratios and such and to go from there. Didn’t work for me, I couldn’t remember the ratios LOL. Oh well, just like there authors need to have readers, cooks need to have people to appreciate their food – that’ll be me.

      2. Susan, I learned with a lot of trial and error, believe me. I remember my mom being in the hospital for an extended period of time, when I was young and I decided I was going to surprise my family with a home cooked meal. It was dreadful! But my dad told everyone to eat the delicious meal I had prepared. LOL As for baking pies, I’m hopeless, more crusts end up in the garbage than in the oven. I have my strengths, which are the dishes I learned at mom’s kitchen table, and I have my weakeness, making food that require a PhD in reading recipes. LOL Like everything else, we find what works for us and have fun with it.

      2. I need a title. LOL But I’m sure one will come to me when I finish the novella.

It’s about an Italian/Irish decoy mistress heroine, who tends to get into a lot of trouble, especially after one of her “clients” drops dead during a “date” and she ends up in the emergency room with a bite on the ass.

Her family arrives, the hunka-burning-love cop hero is there along with her high school nemises, not to mention the mobsters that are after her, and she has no clue as to why.

Did I mention I like to twist things in my plots? LOL

        Thanks for the offer, Fedora.

    1. Hi, Mel,

Whew! Your questions aren’t too hard. LOL

      1. I can speak 4 languages, however, I’m losing a few of them, since I don’t speak them on a daily basis. Italian, French, Spanish & English.

      2. I met my husband while we worked for the same company. I had borrowed his company car, and got into an accident, (not my fault) but it was that crash that led to our relationship. 🙂

      3. Family fun and I don’t make resolutions, because I never keep them. LOL

Best wishes to you and your family.

I didn’t ask too many questions, eh? In college my major was Spanish and my minor was French. I wanted to be a translator. Never came to pass. lol!
However, I can speak Spanish a bit. It’s
hard when you don’t have anyone to practice with for years. But now it pays to know Spanish! I’d like to learn Russian and Vietnamese as well. OH, and I’m teaching myself Lakota and Cherokee. I pick up language very fast. I’m thrilled because Rosetta Stone will have Navajo now. It’s always been hard to find Native American language tapes. Thanks to my iPhone I can learn Cherokee and years ago I got lucky and found a book with tapes for Lakota.
Great story how you and your hubby met. A crah of car and heart! Wonderful.
I don’t make (keep) resolutions either. lol! Who knows what the New Year will bring?! I hope it brings you much joy! 🙂 xo Mel

      2. LOL Not too many questions. 🙂 I don’t mind at all.

I’ve always had an interest in languages, and wish I could speak more of them. I did dabble a bit with other languages, and learned some Russian, German and Dutch words, but not enough to say I am fluent in any of those languages.

VERY COOL on the languages you are learning. You’ll have to keep me updated!

  20. Hi Selena the blog looks good I’m looking forward to your recipe posts.

what do you think is the hardest part about becoming published. The waiting for a books to be accepted or waiting for your first contracted book to come out?

    Like

    1. Thanks, Jenn.

      Good question.

I think it all depends on what type of person you are. Example: If you lack patience, then waiting for the contract offer and for the book to come out can be hard.

If you are OCD and tend to polish and edit, then the whole writing process can be hard.

If you have a thin skin, then reviews can be hard.

Main thing is that a writer loves to write, enjoys the whole process, and accepts that they are not going to please everyone.

P.S. The hardest part of writing for me is letting go of the story and not overthinking every detail. LOL

      Hope that answered your question.

My latest release with Samhain, WHAT A GIRL WANTS, I had a lot of input into the cover, and it was a pleasure to work with the talented Natalie Winters (cover artist). However, the final decision is always up to the publisher and the marketing team, the author does have the opportunity to give details of what she’d like, it’s a team effort.
