Please join me in congratulating, Jessica on her new release, THE ZURIAN CHILD as she shares her journey from e-book to print, the blurb and an excerpt from The Zurian Child.

Jessica Subject:

Ever since I received my first e-reader (a Kobo) for Mother’s Day 2010, I’ve been devouring eBooks like crazy, buying and reading more than I ever have each year.

Why?

Because I can access them so much easier. All I have to do it hop on my computer (too dangerous for me to buy on e-reader – don’t want to start that yet), and find the book I’m looking for in one of many eBook retailers that I purchase from, pay for it, and I’ve got a new book to read. I don’t have to drive anywhere, and hope the book store had the one I’m looking for. I don’t have to order it and wait for the book to arrive. An eBook is there, instantly.

All of my stories are published in eBook format as well, so of course, I like to support my fellow eBook authors, including Selena Robins. (If you haven’t read What a Girl Wants yet, what are you waiting for? It rocks!)

Now though, I have my first print book. The Zurian Child released October 18 in print.

Oh my gosh! Yes, I read more eBooks than anything, but there is something special about holding a print copy of my book in my hands.

Why?

Well, on my e-reader, I not only have all of my eBooks along with hundreds of others, but I also use it to check my email, the weather and more. A print book is just that, my book and nothing else. No other distractions.

The Zurian Child Blurb:

Lindsay Beckett longed to be reunited with her first love, Quinn Montgomery, until she learns what sent him fleeing from her in the first place. He’s an alien, a Hemera. As if that wasn’t enough to ruin her dreams of a perfect life, when their child is born, they discover she fulfills a prophesy. Lindsay wants to ignore it, until her husband is murdered and suddenly believing becomes a matter of survival.

Lindsay and her young daughter are forced to rely on another Hemera, her husband’s partner and best friend, Bryce Beuermann as more and more of the Hemera are slaughtered. Bryce will do anything to help his best friend’s widow–including suppressing his own deep feelings for her.

The Zurian Child excerpt – PG-13

When Bryce and Lorne removed their socks and set their feet on the coffee table, she flushed. She’d had many opportunities over the summer to look at his feet, particularly when he wore only his swim trunks. But she’d kept her distance, catching only the occasional glimpse of his broad, bare chest or other parts of his body, wondering if they matched what she’d seen in her visions.

Both Bryce and Lorne’s toes remained held apart by skin, noticeable skin. Unlike the translucent and pliable tissue which formed between her own toes, theirs appeared thicker, widening the total width of the front of their feet.

“We are not from around here,” Lorne said. He removed his feet from the table and brushed them across the plush carpet. “Your mother, Quinn, and your father, Lindsay, as well as Bryce and I, are from another planet located twenty light years from Earth.”

She turned to her husband, waiting for his reaction. They were his guests telling the ridiculous story. If they were friends of hers, she would have told them to leave.

Quinn only raised his eyebrows. She couldn’t read his expression as he stared at Bryce. “This is not the time to be discussing this. We’ve just returned from out holidays, our honeymoon at that.”

“No, this is the time. We should have talked about this long ago.”

Her gaze shifted between the two of them. This has to be some kind of gag, but this is more likely to come from Michael and Francis, not Bryce, not based on anything Quinn had ever said about him. The punch line didn’t come and Quinn gripped her hand tighter. This is no joke.

Maintaining his dry expression, Bryce continued. “I’ve known all along. I remember my trip to Earth and being placed with the Beuermanns. I don’t remember my parents though.” His chin fell to his chest. “It’s not easy living with a secret like this. I figured my best friend should know.”

Bryce told what he believed to be the truth, but despite her belief in aliens, she refused to accept anyone in the room came from anywhere but Earth.

“I’m sorry, Lindsay.” Quinn refused to look at her, but maintained his hold on her hand.

She’d never felt more uncomfortable than this moment. What did Quinn believe? That he’s an alien?

  1. Good Morning Selena and nice to meet you Jessica. It’s 12:05 here in N.C. So I guess it’s morning!!
Your book sounds fascinating Jessica, and the trailer is wonderful. The music is haunting!
As far as e-book or print. I love the ease of clicking on a picture, and there’s my book. But I really enjoy keeping print books of my favorite authors. Especially signed copies. I guess that’s not much of an answer, bit it’s mine. :). I will be adding The Zurian Child to my TBR. The cover is beautiful!!!

  2. Hi, Jessica (and Selena)!
I like that ebooks take up way less physical space but I LOVE print books. Part of the enjoyment of reading is holding the actual book and being able to flip through/ bookmark multiple pages as often and whenever I want while I’m reading , not having to charge/recharge in order to read, and the three-dimensionality of the book itself. Also, I’m in front of a computer most of the day at work and I find that my eyes get more tired constantly reading a screen.
Of course, it could be the smell of books…JK Rowling said she read somewhere that studies show that the smell of books is addicting 🙂
Congrats on your new release! It sounds like a great read…love the blurb and excerpt!

Just discovered your novel on Selena’s site. I am absolutely blown away by your trailer. Totally professional! The concept of The Zurian Child is light years away from my two YA novels waiting patiently in the wings for a publisher. I am adding Zurian Child to my TBR list.

  6. I like both!! The ebook is easier for me to take to all the wonderful kid practices that I attend and I get the instant gratification of buying and dowloading. However, I love the smell and feel of a print book. Sometimes I even like the attention that the print book brings when someone asks, “What are you reading?” I love to pimp a good book.

Thank you so much, Selena, for having me on your blog today! It’s always a pleasure to come and visit!

Pat – Thank you so very much! The trailer I created myself, and the cover was designed by Reese Dante. And I too enjoy signed copies. Always seems to make the book more enjoyable. But eBooks can be signed too through Kindlegraph. 🙂

PC – I can bookmark and highlight with my ereader, the same as any book. And I don’t have a problem with the screen. Tough I won’t read on my computer itself. But the constant charging required is a pain. And I won’t tell you what the smell of books at a library does to me. LOL Thanks so much! 🙂

bn100 – Thank you!! Yes, they both have their conveniences. That’s why I still read both. 🙂

Robin – No, they can’t handle as much abuse as a paperback, so that’s why I bought a case for my ereader. LOL But books are great, no matter which platform you read them. Thanks! 🙂

  8. Hi Jessica and Selena! I like the convenience and ease of buying ebooks and that is mostly what I read these days. But there is something about holding a print book in my hands that I absolutely love! I can look at the cover as often as I want and flip around from page to page without losing my place. Print books also remind me of my youth when I would come out of the library so excited to read the stack of books I just checked out!! In truth, I guess I do prefer print books over ebooks =).

Both are very true! Now, I go to the library with my kids, as my TBR pile is so huge, and I’d feel bad getting a book out when I already have so many on my ereader. But kids love picking out their own books. 🙂

Ebooks take up no storage space and I don’t have to carry a bulky book in my purse. Also, with some of the books I read, I like the fact that no one can see the cover art, which can be a dead giveaway to the type of book I am reading 😉

Now my house has more room for storage. That’s a great thing too because I have over 1000 ebooks on my Kindle. Lol. I do have some paperbacks that I’ve saved or had signed. It’s still nice to actually hold a book every now and then. Sorry I got carried away with my answer. I like ebooks best because it’s easier to get them and their CHEAPER.

I’ve also loved paperback books, way back I used to love hardcover as well and I have quite a collection of books, that I am hanging on to, even though I know I have to donate some of them to the library. When I got my first e-reader a couple of years ago, I didn’t think I’d become addicted to it as much as I am. I take it everywhere with me, and it comes in handy when I’m waiting around at appointments or even in grocery store line-ups.

It also saves a lot of room in our luggage while we travel. I buy both, but these days, the convenience of buying directly from my Kindle has me even more addicted. LOL Hey, it could be worse, we could be addicted to something that isn’t as healthy.

I love that a lot of books come in both formats.
