Lauren Smith Unplugged

She’s naughty and nice, and a multi-published, best-selling author who is a lawyer by day, and a word warrior of sexy reads at night.

She was interviewed on Playboy Radio to discuss her steamy novels where she revealed a SURPRISING twist.

Lauren discusses this twist in our chat here on my blog. Read on to find out what it is.

Please join me in welcoming Lauren Smith to the blog.

What is the most outrageous thing you’ve done in the name of “research” for one of your books?

Lauren: I haven’t done anything really crazy in the name of research. I have however, just done crazy things that are fun enough I hope they end up in a book someday. I once touched a four-hundred-year-old female mummy in a crypt in a church in Dublin Ireland where it was rumored Bram Stoker got his idea for Dracula because the corpses in this crypt didn’t decay.

You can read my review of WICKED DESIGNS on Amazon and Goodreads. A fun, sexy book. ~Selena~

Selena: Tell us something that is not well known about you.

Lauren: I’m a virgin!

Selena: What did I tell you about the twist, folks? Lauren discusses her virginity in an interview (click here to read more). If you could have had the starring role in one film already made, which movie would you pick?

Lauren: Oh my heavens…it would be the girl opposite Scott Eastwood in the movie The Longest Ride…damn he’s heavenly and I’d want a piece of him.

Selena: If you could have been told one thing that you weren’t told when you were a teenager, what would you like to have heard?

Lauren: Hmmm that’s a toughie. I’ve been really lucky getting good advice, so I’m not sure, but I know one thing that was told to me that helped when I was younger. “Tough out the things you hate doing. Some day when you’re old enough, you won’t have to do them anymore.”

Selena: Name the most famous person you’ve had a face to face encounter with (“brush with greatness”).

Lauren: Apparently I bumped into that girl who was Willow from Buffy The Vampire Slayer when we were leaving a pizzeria in Los Angeles one time. But I was looking down and didn’t know it and my brother told me 30 seconds later and I was like…what?!

Selena: If you could be one for just 24 hours, what cereal box cartoon character would you be? Why?

Lauren: Count Chocula (but I’d want to be a girl version).

Lauren, thank you for the fun interview!

Shifter Appeal: Why we love an Alpha

Please join me in welcoming, Sophie H. Morgan, author of the extremely well-written paranormal romance, ASHES.

A book I thoroughly enjoyed. You can read my review here.

Sophie is here to talk about the appeal of those sexy, shifter alpha heroes.

Shifter Appeal: Why we love an Alpha

by Sophie H. Morgan

There are two words on the blurb of a romance cover that will guarantee to hook my attention: Shifter Male.

And it seems I’m not the only one to fall prey (ha) to this exciting hero. If you do a browse through current romance books, probably two out of five feature a gorgeous, ripped shifter hero. So why do we love the shifter male so much? Here are my picks for why.

sophie-3First and foremost, it’s got to be the alpha in him. We live in a society where a dominant man is considered a bad thing – but in a world of supernatural sexy times, a man who crowds your space, and holds your stare while he growls your name is hawt. He is masculinity personified, six feet of unshaven, wild gorgeousness. Nobody is going to stand in his way from claiming what he considers his: you.

A shifter’s loyalty cannot be matched. There’s an animal within, sharing its need to protect and possess, and if he decides you’re worth protecting, you’re more likely to find calorie-free chocolate than shake him off your tail. This animal drives him, leaving him partly wild, unabashedly sexy, and – sometimes – obsessively protective. It takes a strong heroine to stand up to him. And that is often where the best romances begin.

My last pick would have to be the hidden – or not so hidden – dark side every shifter hero carries. That animal roughness might make him irresistible, but it can also carry a heavy price. The wildness can often tip over to ruthlessness, sometimes leaving scars our hero has to battle until the right woman can tame both beast and man to help him heal them.

In ASHES, Cade, a jackal shifter, still carries a torch for his old forbidden love, Ana. When he runs into her on the scent of a rebellion leader, the flames of passion explode. Luckily my dark shifter can take a lot of heat. =)

What qualities do you like best in a shifter hero?

Getting to know Sophie a bit more, here’s a quick interview I did with her:

Selena: Name 3 actors that provided visual aid for your hero, Cade in ASHES.

Oh, so many choices. I had a cross between Chris Hemsworth with dark hair, Joe Manganiello, and Jensen Ackles (LOVE HIM). Rugged, witty in the face of danger and dangerously handsome. The perfect man!

Nice visual there! What do you consider to the most valuable thing you own: when you were a child/teenager/now?

When I was a child, the most valuable thing I owned was a china statuette of two white cats. My mum had given it to me, and I considered it a really grown up thing to own. When I was a teenager, the most valuable thing I owned was my first pet which was a rabbit I called ‘Fudge’. She hated me, but I’m stubborn. We grew a tolerance of each other. And now the most valuable thing I own is a toss-up between my old laptop which I’ve written up to 8 books on and doesn’t work anymore OR a large photograph frame with multiple photos of different Christmases with my family.

Rabbit named Fudge, love it! If you could have had one starring role in one film already made, which movie would you pick?

I would have LOVED to have been Baby in Dirty Dancing. Learning to dance with Patrick Swayze. Oh yeah.

He was an alpha who took ballet, and had some awesome moves. Tell me something about you that is not available if we Google you?

Sophie: I have a strange craving for ice. I love to chew it even though I know it’s bad for my teeth – I’m not allowed to keep any in the freezer in case I fall off the wagon 😉

What an interesting addiction, and not having it in the freezer. Great character quirk for a book. 😉 What article of clothing most closely describes your personality?

Is it sad if I say slippers? LOL Comfortable and cosy, warm and nice to snuggle up with and always reliable.

Selena: Not sad at all, it describes you to a T. 🙂 Based on something you’ve already done, how might you make it into the Guinness Book of World Records?

I once ate an entire can of whipped cream on one cup of hot chocolate. And wasn’t sick. That’s worthy of a record. 🙂

Selena: You are my shero for many reasons, but that one nails it. 🙂

Secrets can burn.
The Divided Kingdom, Book 1

BONUS – It’s on sale right now for 99 cents.

Reared from birth to rule the Phoenix territory, Ana fled her future and her past when her parents were murdered. Now she secretly leads a rebellion to stop the human ruler, Edward, from experimenting on supernaturals.

When she finds herself cornered by an assassin, she knows just what to do: Roast him and toast him. Then recognition sends blue-tipped flames licking through her veins. It’s Cade, the royal bodyguard who once rejected her youthful confession of love.
When Cade regains consciousness from the force of Ana’s punch, he’s still reeling from shock—and fury. He’d loved the princess, and for ten years he thought her dead. Though his inner jackal growls with desire for her, she is the key to completing his mission for Edward—hunt down the rebel known as Liberty.
Ana can’t believe Cade doesn’t know the truth about Edward. If she can convince him of it, his blade could turn the tide of the rebellion. But first they must get beyond their past, or the whole kingdom could go up in smoke.

Contains incendiary sex between a phoenix princess with a secret identity, and a jackal shifter who can take a lot of heat. Boys from the “hood”, a king jacked up on enhanced DNA, and killer heels. Anybody got a match?

He’s no pushover. And she ain’t no fairy princess.
The Divided Kingdom, Book 2

No one would guess that Sapphy, awesome whirlwind of Maze badassness, grew up sheltered in the Fae realm. Witnessing a murder drove her into the humans’ broken cities to hide, but now she’s back, going undercover to keep history from repeating as the tournament to choose a new Fae queen dawns.

sophie-2The only pebble in her shit-kicking boot is the jaw-gritting interference of Nathe Amergin, a Fae Enforcer whose solemn violet eyes set her skin to sizzle.

After the loss of his beloved sister, Nathe saved his last shred of sanity by clamping a lid on his emotions and forging a path to justice. When this frustrating, blue-eyed, my-go-or-I’ll-blow female informs him of a possible threat to the realm, his offer of support is genuine, if reluctant.

While he’s willing to work with her to protect his people, this sinful smart-ass skates perilously close to unleashing an avalanche of passion that, as the final choosing looms and whispers turn to screams, could bury them both.

Warning: Contains ear-blushing sex between a flighty Fae with a mean air jab and a grounded Elemental who makes her earth move. Add a murderous queen clinging to power, and sabotage that strikes out of thin air. Anyone got ear plugs?

Will Graham Unplugged

Please join me in welcoming Will Graham to my blog. Will writes suspense/thrillers, creating fictional worlds that feel real with well-developed characters, witty dialog, peppered with intelligent humor, with a lot of vivid action, and splashes of romance.

Besides authoring great escapism for readers, Will is involved with PROTECT (a pro-child, anti-crime organization) by donating a portion of the proceeds of his books to this organization.

Details with links to purchase his books and help PROTECT listed below.

1Selena: If it were possible to sit in a time machine and go back to your 18-year-old self, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

WILL: The single biggest piece of advice I would give my 18-year-old self is “Slow Down…. Adulthood is NOT all it is cracked up to be.” I think a lot of us feel that way; we didn’t really appreciate what our youth had to offer because we were in such a hurry to become Adults.

Selena: Yes, I can related. My parents always used to say to us, “never wish away time, it’s the one thing you can never do-over and get back.” I try to remember that.

You just won a yacht. What would you name it? Why?

WILL: I would name it THE FINALLY! which is pretty self-explanatory

Selena: Do you have a tattoo? If so, what is the graphic? If not, if you were to get a tattoo, what would the graphic be?

1WILL: No, I don’t, and probably never will. I have seen some absolutely beautiful tattoos work done on others, but it just is not for me.

Selena: I feel the same way, not for me, and there’s that little thing called a needle…unnecessary pain is not my thing.

Besides your loved ones, who would you want to be stuck with on a deserted island?

WILL: Anyone who knows me know this automatic answer: Jane Seymour. Again, I don’t believe a lot of explanation is needed. I first saw her in LIVE AND LET DIE when I was 17-years-old and that — as they say — was the end of that! I would also dearly love to have a formal dinner with our Founding Fathers and ask if things worked out the way they planned.

Selena: Would be interesting to hear what the Founding Fathers have to say about pop culture.

On the other hand, who would you rather NOT be stuck with on that island?

WILL: I’m going to behave myself on this one, but there indeed a list. A short one, to be sure, but a List nonetheless.

1Selena: Oh, no need to behave yourself on this blog, but probably a good idea not to list those. I think we all have a list of those people…boy who used to punch me in the arm in Grade 7 is on my list, but I won’t mention his name.

What was the moment that inspired you to add suspense/thriller author to your resume?

WILL: I have wanted to be a writer since I was seven-years-old and taught myself to type on my mother’s college typewriter; one of those huge “Royal” manual monsters. As far as genre goes, Suspense/Thriller is what I have always loved to read and most advice for writers begins with “Write what you love,”, so…..

Selena: What is the most interesting tidbit you can share, regarding research for your books?

1WILL: For the SPIDER’S stories featuring Nicholas White, it’s professional experience of my own.

Other works are adaptations of screenplays that did not work out, or just some nice short stories that really cannot find a home anymore. As an example, the short “One Minute After Midnight” was written for a Cold War anthology, but didn’t make the final cut.

Not so long ago, it would have been filed away and forgotten. That is the beauty of today’s publishing industry: what once would have been relegated to the filing cabinet can now be made available for everyone to read and enjoy!
Thank you, Will, I personally look forward to reading more of your work.

Come on over and get SCHOOLED 4.0 & enter for a giveaway!

Please welcome the effervescent and witty Deena Bright to the blog as she openly shares her journey toward writing one of her novella’s.  Deena is also generously giving away 2 copies of SCHOOLED 4.0 (Details below).

Now, let me first say that when I received Deena’s blog post, I had no idea she was going to compliment me so much. I didn’t even have to bribe or pay her in chocolate, pizza, wine or steak (Deena loves steak), and I am honored and humbled by her words. I actually blushed reading them, and it’s not easy to make me blush.

Right back at you, Deena, you’re a wonderful writer with a writing style I love, a great sense of humor and a good friend I am pleased to have found through your other work.

Okay, enough gushing, here’s Deena.

Deena is also sharing an excerpt from SCHOOLED 4.0.

Hey all you smut-loving fans of fiction, I’m Deena Bright.  I’m in love with Selena.  Why?  Why the Hell not???  She is about the most generous, thoughtful, and helpful fellow writer I have ever met.  I have never heard her speak an ill word about anyone else in this world.  LOVE THAT ABOUT HER.  Me?  Well, I’m the person you need to sit by if you want to trash-talk anyone—even the busboy with a rotten tooth and acne.  (Yeah, had one of those last night—at a restaurant—not in my bed.)

First of all, I want to thank Selena for letting me usurp her blog today.  Technologically, I cannot figure out how to create my own blog, so I thrive on commandeering other people’s technological possessions.  Selena just rocks for always being there for me!

Now since SCHOOLED 4.0 is four books in one.  I want to spend the remainder of this post discussing the fourth novella in the book, All Girls’ School.  It is a love story depicting the “sexual awakening” of one woman as she realizes her desire for female love and companionship.

Let’s go back in time—cue the foggy, blurry screen and flashback music.  My best friend was married to a man with a beautiful daughter and another on the way.  Sadly, that second daughter died in her arms when she was only eight days old.  It was devastatingly horrifying—as I’m sure anyone can imagine.  Well, what we don’t realize is that it is hard to grieve with another person.  We all grieve differently.  The different mourning paths she and her husband took veered them in very dissimilar directions, destroying their marriage.  It was sad to witness.

Eventually, my best friend found true love and complete understanding and acceptance in another woman.  They are now both blissfully happy. She and her ex-husband are great friends, so it all worked out for the best, despite the tragic and unbearable road they journeyed to get there.

Anyway, I wanted to write a lesbian-awakening.  I thought “short novella—piece of cake.”  Oh Hell was I wrong!  It’s really freaking hard, so damn hard, to write a book when you know virtually nothing about what your book is about.  I had to basically interrogate my friend on their relationship—their intimate affairs—everything!

One night, my husband and I went to dinner with them, and I just grilled both of them about lesbian sex and relationships.  They answered every single question—never letting me down or getting embarrassed by my inquisition.  My husband, however, struggled as he was about busting out of his boxer briefs—if you get my drift.  Actually, a little breeze or drift may have sent him over the edge at that point.

Then, later that night, I went on porn sites and watched some girl-on-girl action.  At that point, my husband was like “Honey, is there something you want to tell me?”  Hahaha!  I love that man!  He is such a trooper.

The point is, I didn’t want to let my friends down or write something that was so far from reality that people would roll their eyes and think “this chick doesn’t know what she’s talking about.” I wanted it to be real—sexually as well as intimately.  I wanted to tell a story that needs to be told.  My friend is happier now than she has ever been in her entire life, and I am thrilled for her.  I love…LOVE.  No matter what kind of love it is.  If it brings her happiness, then I don’t give a rat’s hairy ball sac if she loves a man or a woman.  Her heart is hers to give; she may give it to whomever she so desires.

Truthfully, I was terrified for my friend to read All Girls’ School.  I didn’t want to screw up the story.  I wanted to make them proud of me as well as themselves.  My friend sent me a text this morning.  This was her text, verbatim:  “I just finished the book.  It was wonderful.  It turned me on and made me tear up all at once.  You captured lesbian relationships perfectly.  It was so well-written.  Thank you for writing this book.”   So yeah, Deena Bright—NAILED IT!  😉  Thanks for reading today.  Hopefully, you delve into your smutty sides and give Schooled 4.0 a shot.

Four books for four bucks!  You can’t go wrong!

From the Original Schooled (Book 1 in the Schooled Series)

“Damn girl, what took you so long?  Let’s dance.”  As I exit the bathroom, Briggs grabs me around the waist and pulls me toward the dance floor. My attempts at protest are futile. I’m no match for his strength and power—Hell, his magnetism.

It’s the slowest rap beat I’ve ever heard. It’s no “Push It.” Where are Salt-n-Peppa when you need them?  I cannot imagine how people dance to this music.  It isn’t the fast-pumping rap or upbeat pop music I’m used to dancing to.  It’s a slow, rhythmic pounding. I quickly learn that people don’t actually dance to it. They just slowly grind against one another.  It’s hot, slow, and so erotic.  It’s certainly a simulation of what else could happen if these movements were to continue all night. Oh, so hot. It’s been long, way too long.

Well this certainly isn’t helping my cause. Holy shit. Briggs places the front of his body tightly up against my back and bottom.  I can feel his breath on the side and back of my neck. His arms wrap around my waist, holding me tightly against his pelvis.  I can easily feel him rubbing, grinding, and moving into my backside, imitating a slow, easy, love-making motion.  He uses his hands to move my hips in a way that he wants them to move.  My body melts and melds into his.  I lose control of my senses and actions, letting him control my movements, as well as my desires.  This has got to be his ammo.  These moves, this seduction, have to be his weapon of choice.

I can’t allow my will to cave, for a student to do this to me.  But my God, it feels so good, so right.  It’s been so long, so frustratingly long.  I feel my will faltering, my decisions wavering. His penis begins to enlarge against me, finding its way to my ass. Only my linen skirt and thong and his loose-fitting athletic shorts stand between his hardening shaft and the crack of my butt.  I can feel its size.  Oh God.

“You’re so sexy Janelle.”  His raspy whisper tingles my ear, making me shiver and long for more. He just called me Janelle.  Oh shit.  This is getting out of hand. I have to stop this. Please give me the strength to stop this man.  No, to stop myself.  But instead of stopping it, I hear myself whimper, a sound of acquiescence. A sound of my will failing. I feel Briggs’ tongue slowly travel from the base of my neck to the tip of my earlobe. He starts to turn my body to face him. I moan and succumb to him, facing him.  His blue eyes are smoldering with the most passionate look of desire, a look I’ve never seen on a man’s face before. Never.  I have to have him.  I lean in to him; our lips meet.  His tongue finds mine, and my knees weaken.  I want to have him, devour him, feel him.  I need him. I swallow his moan and return my own.  His hands run down my back, pulling me closer into him, onto him.  I need this man.  I have to—

Can’t Go Home (or can one?) Can’t Go Without (you should never go without a GOOD read).

A few weeks ago, Heidi Wiley (friend, avid reader and reviewer) recommended the book CAN’T GO HOME by Angelisa Stone.

I love getting recommendations from friends and readers, as I feel it’s a great way to discover new-to-me-authors.

I read this book (the first in Angelisa’s Oasis Waterfall Series) and fell in love with her voice, humor, and style of writing.

I immediately bought the second book in the series, CAN’T GO WITHOUT and devoured that book as well, and surprised myself, but I don’t want to tell you why, because I wouldn’t want to spoil the book for you.
