Let’s talk happy endings.
Are they predictable, or do they make romance so satisfying?
Every week, it seems someone on social media asks why romance novels always have happy endings. Isn’t that predictable?
Well, yes. And that’s the point.
A happily ever after (HEA) or a happy for now (HFN) isn’t just a nice bonus in romance. It’s fundamental to the genre.
Readers may expect a happy ending, but they don’t know what it will take for the characters to get there.
The twists, obstacles, heartbreak, and unexpected moments along the way keep them turning the pages and coming back for more.
The question isn’t whether romance should have a happy ending.
It’s how the author makes us work for it.
Speaking of happy endings…let’s make it with chocolate.
(No oven required)

Five Minute Chocolate Mug Cake
Ingredients:
- 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 tablespoons milk
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- A small pinch of baking powder
- Sprinkle of chocolate chips (optional)
Directions:
- Mix the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and baking powder in a microwave-safe mug.
- Stir in the milk and oil until the batter is smooth.
- Add a few chocolate chips if you’re feeling indulgent.
- Microwave for about 60–90 seconds, checking as you go. The cake should be set but still moist.
- Let it cool for a minute before digging in.
Cooking times vary by microwave and mug size, so keep an eye on it to avoid turning your little chocolate treat into a rubbery disappointment.
Grab a spoon, settle into your favourite reading spot, and enjoy.
